How to Use Your KROMA Glass Oil Lamp
Mastering the art of the oil lamp is a simple ritual. Follow these steps for the perfect flame:
Fill the Reservoir: Remove the metal wick holder and pour the paraffin oil using a small funnel. Only fill to ¾ of the reservoir to prevent overflow when inserting the wick.
Adjust the Wick: The wick should protrude only 1 to 2 millimeters (approx. 1/16 inch) from the metal support. A wick that is too long will create a large, smoky flame.
Let it Soak: Before the very first light, wait 5 to 10 minutes for the wick to fully absorb the oil by capillarity.
Light It Up: Ignite the wick. If you see smoke, blow it out and trim/lower the wick slightly. To extinguish, simply blow gently on the flame.
Complete Your Ritual
To ensure the perfect experience, we provide all the necessary essentials. Don’t forget to equip yourself with our premium smokeless paraffin lamp oil, replacement wicks, precision funnels for mess-free filling, and elegant rechargeable lighters.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What oil should I use in a glass oil lamp ?
You should only use purified paraffin oil, specifically designed for decorative lamps. Avoid vegetable oils (olive, canola) or essential oils, as they produce black smoke, bad odors, and will clog your wick permanently. For the best experience, we recommend our smokeless paraffin lamp oil, which guarantees an odorless burn and up to 200 hours of light per liter.
Can I use these oil lamps outdoors ?
Yes, our lamps can beautifully illuminate a patio, balcony, or garden table. However, for outdoor use, we recommend choosing models designed with a wind guard to protect the flame from drafts.
Are oil lamps safe for indoor use ?
Absolutely. Our lamps are perfectly suited for indoor use when common safety rules are followed. Always place your lamp on a stable, flat surface to prevent tipping. Never leave a burning flame unattended. Keep the lamp away from curtains, flammable fabrics, and out of reach of children or pets. Always extinguish the lamp before moving it, as hot oil can cause burns.
How do I extinguish the lamp ?
Simply blow gently on the flame, just like a standard candle. Once cool, you can place the small metal cap back on the wick holder (if provided) to preserve the aesthetic and prevent slow evaporation.
Why does my oil lamp smell bad ?
A quality oil lamp should be completely odorless. If you smell something, it is almost always due to the wrong fuel (like vegetable or scented oil). To ensure a scent-free experience, it is imperative to use pure paraffin. Also, ensure your wick is only exposed 1–2 mm; a wick that is too high burns fuel inefficiently and can create a smell.
How does an oil lamp work ?
The reservoir holds the fuel, which travels up the wick by capillarity. Unlike cotton candle wicks that burn away, our models use a durable fiberglass wick that simply transports the oil to the flame without burning itself. Just wait a few minutes after filling for the wick to soak, and you’re ready for instant, stable light. Need a replacement? Find our durable fiberglass wicks for oil lamps here.
Why choose an oil lamp over a candle?
An oil lamp is a more sustainable and economical alternative to traditional wax candles. It is a permanent decorative object, infinitely refillable, creating no wax waste or messy drips on your furniture. In the long run, it is much cheaper: one liter of oil provides about 200 hours of light, equivalent to ten luxury candles, while remaining a beautiful sculptural object even when unlit.
How long does an oil lamp burn ?
Burn time typically varies from 10 to 25 hours per fill, depending mainly on the reservoir size of your chosen model.
How do I clean the glass ?
Maintenance is quick and easy. For the outside, a simple wipe with a microfiber cloth removes dust and fingerprints. If a deep clean is needed, remove the wick mechanism and wash the glass reservoir with warm soapy water. Never use abrasive sponges to avoid scratching the blown glass, and ensure the inside is perfectly dry before refilling.
